Twinkling in the winter sky above us, Matariki signals the Māori New Year. It heralds a time of remembrance, joy, and celebration. Mātauranga Māori (ancestral knowledge and wisdom) is at the heart of celebrations of the Matariki public holiday, and it is a time to honour those we have lost, celebrate the present and look to the promise of a new year and the future. We celebrated some of the amazing Award participants who have achieved things worth remembering and will go on to contribute much more to the future.

To symbolise the nine stars believed to make up the cluster of stars, we recognised nine young people and their successes and contributions to their communities during their Award. Over the week from 24th June (the first celebrated national public holiday commemorating Matariki) we showcased the tremendous stories of these Awardees. These “stars” will inspire us all, and hopefully help us all realise that we can be “stars” in the new year ahead.

Check out our Facebook for the roundup of our Matariki Stars.
