Award partnership to benefit lifesaving youth

Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award (the Award) National Director, Karen Ross, and Surf Life Saving New Zealand (SLSNZ) Chief Executive Officer, Paul Dalton, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to partner together enabling them to deliver the Award to SLSNZ’s young surf lifeguards.

Both organisations are committed to working in partnership to help young surf lifeguards gain their Award.

“The Award is open to anyone between the ages of 14 – 24 years old.  Young people design their own Award programmes, set their own goals and record their own progress.  The development of character and skills such as confidence, communication, problem-solving and resilience is crucial for all young people”.

“It is a privilege to work with Surf Life Saving New Zealand and assist their surf lifeguards to achieve the Award.  All New Zealanders benefit from the crucial role that surf lifeguards fulfil in patrolling our beaches and saving or protecting lives. Many of these young people fulfil elements of the Award during the course of their Lifeguard duties, having these acknowledged with a global award lends weight to their efforts” concluded Karen.

Mr Dalton echoes Karen’s sentiments but adds how thrilled SLSNZ is to be partnering with the Award in this new venture.

“We are excited that our young surf lifeguards have been given this fantastic opportunity through the Award.  Everything that they can learn and finesse during the Award will certainly help them as surf lifeguards, which ultimately helps communities around New Zealand”.

“From what I hear, it’s a great programme that our young members are sure to enjoy with the wide range of tasks they can do to complete the Award.  We can’t wait to see the first graduates from this soon,” he added.

The MOU signals a commitment from both organisations to work closely together and to actively search out opportunities which will provide youth with the skills, knowledge and experience to thrive in our everchanging world.
