Young offenders celebrate gaining their Award

A group of ten young offenders at Christchurch men's prison are celebrating - having gained their Duke of Edinburgh awards.

This was the third youth unit graduation at the prison and bought the total number of young offenders achieving these awards to 30 receiving, between them, 28 Bronze, eight Silver and three Gold Awards.

Both the graduates and unit staff say that it has made a big difference in the youth’s confidence, self-worth and their ability to both lead and work with others.

To achieve their Award the young inmates - whose ages range from 17 to 20 - completed outdoor pursuits, volunteered in the prison gardens, built push-bikes, raised money for Women's Refuge.

Radio New Zealand youth affairs reporter Katie Doyle talked to the inmates about what it meant to them to gain their Award.  Hear Katie's report here
