New Zealand Sailing Trust

The New Zealand Sailing Trust empowers young New Zealanders and bring to life the values of leadership, teamwork, courage and environmental awareness. Since 2008 the New Zealand Sailing Trust has delivered lifetime experiences to over 8000 young people. Participants develop an appreciation of what it took to sail these yachts around the world and complete a challenge with a sense of respect and admiration for their fellow sailors and the sea. Participants come away with an understanding of who they are, respect for their peers, what their strengths are and how it feels to be challenged out of your comfort zone. The programmes are designed to bring out the best in everyone and empower those who participate.

The New Zealand Sailing Trust is an accredited provider of the Gold Residential and Adventurous Journey section of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award. TĪKAPA MOANA YOUTH EXPLORER AND HINE MOANA.

5 DAY SAILING AND KAYAKING PROGRAMMES FOR 15–17-YEAR-OLDS

Two programmes are offered by two respected organisations, the NZ Sailing Trust and Auckland Sea Kayaks, working in partnership to be the nation’s leader in marine based education experiences. The goal of these journeys is to support the growth, development and education of young people in a marine environment.

The Hine Moana programme offers young women an inspirational trip to build self-confidence, improve communication skills, develop new and long-lasting friendships, all in a non-threatening supportive environment.

The young women will be motivated and empowered by relevant programme mentors and reflect upon their journey with self-respect and respect to Kaitiakitanga. A number of young women join us through available bursaries, making this lifechanging experience available to all.

Tīkapa Moana Youth Explorer challenges both male and female students between 15-17 years of age to find the grit and determination to succeed. They will dig deep to find ways to collaborate and complete both individual and shared goals. They will forge new life skills, learn to be flexible and know that the experience has been truly life changing.

This explorative programme encourages the students to be active in the outdoors through the water-based activities of sailing and kayaking. They will learn the basics of the practical skills of navigation, reading weather, setting a course and cooking for a group. Resilience will be tested; decision making will be challenged but the sense of personal achievement will be great.
