Duke of Ed participants give 67,000 hours of voluntary service to the community

Over the past 12 months, Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award participants have given a total of 67,000 hours of voluntary service to the community throughout Aotearoa.

Participants volunteer in all sorts of ways – working in conservation, helping at the SPCA, serving at breakfast clubs, coaching junior sports teams plus much more.

This week we’re celebrating their efforts. Student Volunteer Week, 1-7 April 2019, celebrates and recognises the contributions of students in our communities.

‘Voluntary Service is one of the four key components of Award’, says National Director Karen Ross. ‘Learning the importance of giving back is an essential life skill that our young people gain through doing their Award, and one that many find hugely rewarding’.

'One of our recent Gold graduates said that he found a great sense of satisfaction through giving back to the community.

Our statistics show that 87% of our Award holders continue to volunteer regularly after completing their Award'.

A highlight for us seeing the transformation that often takes place when some of our Award participants who have been on the receiving end of voluntary work eg: Teen mums, refugees, reverse the role and become the giver’, ends Karen.

Young people are stepping up and taking on some of the most important issues our world has ever seen.  #SVW2019 values and amplifies the voice of these students in the social change they are leading and contributing to.

The contributions of these young people in our country nothing short of heroic. During Student Volunteer Week we celebrate the amazing mahi of our Student Superheroes in all areas of volunteering, and work to grow and develop the student volunteer movement.
Throughout Student Volunteer Week, universities and schools nationwide will host a variety of events to celebrate our student superheroes and connect young people with opportunities to get involved in volunteering.
