Adventurous Journey – Boyle River Centre
Adventurous Journey
The Adventurous Journey Section is a key component of the Award, designed to encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery. The Section takes participants out of their comfort zones while promoting teamwork and self-resilience. Adventurous Journeys can take place in various environments and are not just about the physical challenge, but also about shared experiences and providing teams with a sense of accomplishment and discovery in the great kiwi outdoors.
Participants work in small teams to plan and undertake a journey which involves setting, and working to achieve, a Team Goal. The group needs to decide what they want to achieve. As long as both elements are present, any combination of a Journey and a Purpose is allowed for the Adventurous Journey Section of the Award, and will define where the slider is placed on the image below.

The 3 Stages
Stage 1
Preparation and Training
All participants must undergo suitable training to have the appropriate skills and knowledge to confidently undertake their journey. This training is on topics such as leadership, trip planning, map reading and survival skills and should be relevant to the type of journey being undertaken.
This must be run under your Award Unit’s Safety Management System (SMS) or through an organisation whose SMS has been approved by your Award Unit.
Stage 2
Practice Journey
The Practice Journey is a preparatory adventure undertaken by the team to ensure they are adequately prepared, trained and have the necessary skills for a safe Qualifying Journey.
The length and/or number of Practice Journeys required will depend upon the ability of the group; this is a decision for the Award Leader (with the Assessor as appropriate).
The minimum requirements for each level of the Award are:
Bronze
1 day and 1 night, with 6 hours of activity per day.
Silver
Minimum 1 day and 1 night, with 7 hours of activity per day.
Gold

This must be run under your Award Unit’s Safety Management System or through an organisation whose safety management system has been approved by your Award Unit. All Adventurous Journeys must be entered onto the Participant’s Online Record Book, and approved by the Award Leader, prior to going on the Journey.
Stage 3
Qualifying Journey

Silver
3 days and 2 nights, with a minimum of 7 hours of activity per day.

The 10 Requirements
All Adventurous Journeys must meet these 10 Requirements.
Award Flexibilities
The Award Flexibilities are variations to the Award framework that can be applied where doing so would enable greater access to the Award. The Award Flexibilities can be applied on an individual basis with prior approval from National Office. The Award Flexibilities can also be applied to a team, or teams, in the Adventurous Journey section.
- The Bronze Practice Journey can be waived, or where a Practice Journey has been previously completed, it can be counted as the Bronze Qualifying Journey.
- Participants can continue to the Silver level of the Award, without completing a Bronze Qualifying Journey and then be awarded their Bronze Award once the Silver Practice Journey has been completed.
These Award Flexibilities are only for use in exceptional circumstances, where they can enable young people to participate in the Award, where it may have been difficult to do so otherwise.
Award Leaders need to apply for this by emailing the Operations Manager.
